Step 1 - Project 1 - Representation/Compression/Manipulation? of Time

Idea #1 - Soup Bowl

The idea starts off with a camera shot taking from above a bowl of soup and the process would be recording the changes the bowl animates as a a single spoon full is taken out at a time. Other items will be around the bowl that goes with the soup like crackers or bread, and a glass of water next to it being drank every so often during the film. My idea is to edit out any parts of the film that shows the process of me dipping out the soup to eat. This should create a stop animated sequenced of liquid being sucked out of the bowl and glass, even the break or crackers will change and start to disappear till nothing is left of dinner in the end.

Idea #2 - My Space

This idea deals with how we treat our personal space.  In this film I would let up a camera that will record a part of a room that is used the most through out the day.  The location will either be one of 3 places, Kitchen, Bedroom, or Living room.  The room starts out new, clean, and organized a few moments of calm and quiet settles until a short period of the film is speed up as a person comes into focus, allowing us to watch the room change in place but the people almost seem to fade as our interest becomes focus on the room itself.  This idea was inspired while watching a similar film that included a weeks worth of art being done on one large board and covered over and over by different artists.  As you watch the pictures on the wall kind of plays into a animation while the people move in and out of the shot.

1week of art works

In my film I would like to pause the speed and show the calm again, objects around the space will move in real time so you know time as returned to normal for a short period before speeding back once more.

Idea #3 - Morning Routine

This film would be more of a compare and contrast between 2 girls that get ready everyday with the same routine.  One girl spends alot of time on a certain area of her body (hair) while the other girl carelessly speeds through another area of her body (face).  the Camera angle may move to capture 2 angles of the girls but they will stay in the same bathroom.  I'm thinking that this film may take 2 days to shoot, one 30 min period from the first girl, and the other 30 min period from the other girl on the next day.

  1. Each idea seems feasible. From my interpretation, the first two seem to deal with physical space, where the other tends to contrast the way two individuals spend time. When doing your project, consider the best way you can capture space being manipulated within a short time. Maybe you can combine the two ideas, and use the speed of the soup bowl being devoured to emphasize when, and where the different items in the bowl go away.

  2. I agree that each idea seems like they would work out. I am leaning towards the kitchen or frequently used space idea. Especially if you could figure out a way to get some kind of overhead shot...i'm not sure if that is possible, but if it could work out it would be really interesting. i like pizza mike's idea about combining the two ideas...maybe use the kitchen as a space and then focus in on the bowl of soup.

  3. I think the third idea is a solid enough foundation to start with, but your basis for comparison, prepping hair vs. prepping face, isn't that interesting or relevant, considering that the assignment deals with time. So make the comparison about time: what if one girl takes what seems to be hours getting ready, doing all sorts of wild, unnecessary things, while the other girl spends less than a minute or two, just washes her face and leaves, or brushes her teeth and is done.

  4. Personally, I find the third idea the most interesting. It almost seems like it could be a commercial.
